Lupe Fiasco's New Song Brings Back Old Feeling

I just got done listening to Lupe Fiasco's latest song "Words I Never Said" featuring Skylar Grey and I have to say: this is what hip hop has been waiting for! This is the same energy and force that Public Enemy and N.W.A. had, but in the style that only Lupe could deliver.

The song is an attack on the current state of government and affairs, crooked politics, the disgrace that is media, and different conspiracy theories. Whether you agree with all or just some of what he says, you can't deny that what Lupe is attempting to do is needed desperately. I'm sure that it is an eye-opener for many and I'm hopeful that more artists attempt to follow in his footsteps.

While there are some artists that do attempt to be critical of "the powers that be", very few have been as candid and straight-forward as Lupe Fiasco was on this song. The attack on the school system is very valid, the conspiracy theories...let's just say I wouldn't put it past our government, and the critique on Obama is fair (although I did vote for him, I the way things are looking I will again).

I don't know if this song is supposed to be on Lasers or not (keeping my fingers crossed that it is), but regardless, this song is something that I hope spreads and touches the ears of many. We first had the Chuck D open-letter that made its rounds and to follow it up with this song would be a good way for hip hop to kick-off 2011.

If this really has any sort of impact or not will remain to be seen, but if nothing else I hope it light a fire under other rappers and inspires them to become more vocal about issues like these, as well. We need more of artists (not all, but at least a few soldiers) to stand-up and put in song the things that we discuss everyday. That is exactly what Lupe did with "Words I Never Said" and given the last few tracks Lupe has dropped, Lasers is shaping up to be an album for the ages. To check the song out, visit Lupe's blog, or click here.

What do you think about the song? Is Lupe out of line? Is he stating the truth? Do you expect any sort of impact from the song? Leave your comments.

Peace.
