Respect Due: Kurtis Blow

When we talk about pioneers in hip hop, very few can claim that title. Of that elite group, even fewer can say they have helped propel the culture as much as Kurtis Blow. You could argue that he is the person that made hip hop commercially viable. Among numerous accolades, he is most known for being the first hip hop artist to sign with a major record label. In addition, Kurtis also became the first hip hop artist with a certified gold record for rap with his classic song "The Breaks". Other songs that helped make Kurtis Blow the legend he has become include "Christmas Rappin'" and "Basketball". He has also worked with, produced for, and/or been instrumental in the careers of other prominent figures in hip hop such as Run-DMC, Russell Simmons, The Fat Boys, Wyclef Jean, and many others.

Today, Kurtis Blow continues to find ways to make ways and find positive attitude avenues for hip hop. He is the host of an old school hip hop radio station on Sirius Satellite Radio and he continues to speak out against racism, alcohol, and drugs. Maybe most impressive, Kurtis took ministry classes at NYACK College (graduating in 2009) and co-founded the Hip Hop Church, playing the role of rapper, DJ, and worship leader.

Even with all of Kurtis Blow's accomplishments, he continues to strive to help elevate the hip hop community to higher levels. While this should be norm, too often we don't see our leaders taking on this responsibility. However, it is clear that Kurtis is up to the challenge. For all that he has done and for all that he continues to do, to Kurtis Blow we say...Respect Due.

What are your thoughts on Kurtis Blow? What's your favorite song? Thoughts on his current endeavors? Leave all your comments and of course e-mail at straightouttahiphop@gmail.com.

Peace.
