#howcome record labels (mainly majors) don'thave programs that have their artist get involved in the community? As some of youmay know, the NBA season kicked off a couple days ago and so they have beenshowing a lot of the "NBA Cares" commercials. This got me towondering, why don't labels have the same thing set up for their artists (or ifthey do why isn't it advertised)? For those that may not know, NBA Cares is aprogram set up by the NBA that has the players in the league go to communitiesthat they're located in and spend time with people (mainly young students).Theyalso do their part to help support those less fortunate by doing things likehelping build homes, paint rec centers, and more. With the influence that theNBA and its stars have, it's almost their responsibility to do so.
What is preventing the music industry from doing the same thing? Maybe there are some preventions that I don't know about, but I could see it being effective. Many of the stars on the labels (regardless of genre) have just as much if not more influence that many NBA stars, so they should be out there in the community, too. This is especially true for hip hop artists that come from those neighborhoods! It's a great way for kids to see them outside of the music, for them to really make a difference and be present in their communities (outside shooting YouTube videos to prove they're from there).
I applaud those that have set up their own foundations (I know people like Ludacris are really involved), but there are many players in the NBA that have their own foundations, as well. However, getting the artists out there and really showing the positive things that they can do, it would really make the difference in lives of hundreds, possibly thousands of young people as well as improve the reputation of the hip hop community. I think it would work, but maybe I'm crazy.
What do y'all think? What good could come from this? Is there a reason it can't work? Any ideas for what it might look like? Let me hear something. Comment and of course you can e-mail at straightouttahiphop@gmail.com.
