Artist Alert: T-Ran

We've been gone a little bit, but we're back again with another artist for y'all to check out. This time, he hails right out of my own backyard, Oakland, CA. His name is T-Ran and not only does he take the art form seriously, but he delivers a message through his music. It is rare in these days to find somebody this young (he is 21 years old) with such a conscious outlook and viewpoint of the world. Because of this though, he is more likely to be looked over as opposed to somebody else who is simply saying something a very little value. His influences, which include Tupac, Lauryn Hill, Kanye West, and Lupe Fiasco, really show through in his music and allow him to speak on a wide range of topics.

T-Ran dropped his first mixtape last March by the name of The Opening Act: The Dreamer, which was very successful in terms of downloads. Not only is he putting out good music and looking to make a difference, but it is also evident that he is very intelligent. He is currently enrolled at Howard University on a full academic scholarship. As I mentioned in another post, the college experience can drastically change a person's outlook on life and you can see how these experiences have shaped T-Ran's music. He is continuing to grow his fan base everyday, so support him now so that you can say you knew him before he gained his major following. Below are links to two songs including one dedicated to Oscar Grant entitled "What Happened". If you are interested in keeping up-to-date with T-Ran, you can find him on Facebook with both a group and a "Fan" page (or whatever they call it nowadays when you "Like" something or somebody). Support people who want to maintain the essence of hip hop and say something worthwhile in the process.

What do you think about T-Ran and his music. Feedback is always welcome. We have one more post on another artist and then we'll get back to some content (I know it's been a while outside of the "Respect Due" post). Of course, you can always e-mail at straightouttahiphop@gmail.com.

Peace.
