A New Blend of Music (Thoughts?)

Often I get people that send me music that isn't really worth of me listening to at all and usually goes against the very things I speak about in the blog, however the two tracks I have posted below don't fit in that category. I wanted to pass this off to you guys because I think that it's different, but I'm still on the fence about it. This is a group called Gangstagrass and they have blended hip hop lyrics with country music and production. I think that it's great that we have people trying to blend genres of music and not stick to the same old script, but it might be a little too country for my taste. I think that this is more of a layering of hip hop over country, than it is a blend, however, there is still something unique about it and that's why I wanted to pass it along.

Gangstagrass has already received some recognition as they have scored the theme song for the new television series Justified on FX. From what I understand, Gangstagrass is a group made up of hip hop artist T.O.N.E-Z, singer/songwriter/producer Rench, and other musicians that places rap lyrics over country instrumentation and production. They have a full length album dropping titled Lightning On The Strings, Thunder On The Mic. Who knows, this may be a form of music ahead of its time. If you want more information on them and the album, you can click here.

Let me know what you guys think about the two tracks below. I'm sure that Gangstagrass and their team would like to know as well. Regardless of whether it is universally appealing or not, I want to thank them for trying to expand the boundaries of hip hop and music as a whole.  Leave your comments and thoughts. You can always e-mail at straightouttahiphop@gmail.com, as well. Another blog is coming very soon, so stay tuned!

I have to agree with you. I does not sound like a blend as much as it sounds like layering, or trying to force two things together. I really want to like it, but I'm not feeling it. Part of that could be because it doesn't sound to me like the artists are really feeling it.

BTW, I'm really diggin' your blog!
