Boondocks

It is no secret that I love the show "The Boondocks." I know some people think it's a little over the top, but honestly, I see the connection between Boondocks and hip hop. Behind all of the (what could be considered) absurd commentary, there is a message in every episode. People tend to miss these messages because they take everything at face value. They miss the subtleties of Malcolm X and Che Guevara's pictures on the wall. Huey Freeman in every episode attempts to show us the things that we need to stop, change, or improve upon as a people. However, all people get are the laughs of Riley and Uncle Ruckus. The way that people view Boondocks is the same way that people view hip hop.
Hip hop is full of positive and inspirational messages. It teaches history (think Nas) and gives hope to those that feel they have none. Yet, hip hop usually gets bad rap for the language used. People just HEAR the words instead of LISTENING to the music. They miss out on all that the art form has to offer because they don't agree with a few words that are used.
The other part is that they're not able to understand. The metaphors and similes can sometimes fly by at 100 miles an hour, leaving those that can't follow hearing just a bunch of words and not a message. Between that and those that simply choose not to follow what is being said, many people write hip hop off as nothing more than beats littered with unacceptable language. Little do they know that most MCs consider themselves poets and often they miss out of some of the most beautiful poetry written.
At times, I hate that people don't really understand and pick up on the messages given in both hip hop and Boondocks, but then I realize that the messages reach those that it is supposed to. Those that want and/or need these messages, lessons, and signs of hope receive them. As long as those that need it get it, then over time people will start to realize the power and effectiveness of hip hop (and Boondocks lol).
Do you watch Boondocks? Is it a little too much for you? Had you ever noticed the connection before? Below is a small clip from a Boondocks episode. I admit, it is a little extreme, but pay attention and you might be able to pick up on one or two real lessons and if you watch the entire episode, you will see the true meaning of the episode. Leave a link to some of your favorite Boondocks clips/episodes in the comment section and tell us the true meaning behind it. You can also email at straightouttahiphop@gmail.com.
Peace.
