Asher Roth's "Asleep in the Bread Aisle" Review

I know this is long overdue, but I'm going to still post it because I said I would. So, here is my review on the Asleep in the Bread Aisle. I have already given the new Eminem and the Method Man & Redman album a listen so those reviews will be up shortly.

1. Lark On My Go-Kart: The album starts out the usual playful Asher that most have become accustom to and come to appreciate. Lyrics were cool, but nothing too fascinating. Just a simple intro to the album. I'll give it a 3.

2. Blunt Cruisin': This song is more of Asher just enjoying himself and doing something a little crazy. He actually performed this song when he opened up for Lupe Fiasco at a concert I attended and it really got the crowd amped up. As far as on the album, though, it's sub par at best. No real lyrics here and not the same energy as it would in concert. I have to give this a 3, as well.

3. I Love College: This has become a fan favorite amongst college students. The song is very radio friendly and can appeal to everybody. Minus some of the things that he has learned from being in college (i.e. wearing "two rubbers" which is definitely not what you're supposed to do lol), the song is pretty cool. I''ll give it a 4.

4. La Di Da: The first song that really allows the listener to hear Roth's lyrical ability. While this is not his best showing, you can at least start to see that he has the talent to really spit when he wants to. Each verse gets a little better and there will be more highlights throughout the album. This song deserves a 4.

5. Be By Myself: This song is pretty good. Describing reasons why he can't be tied down in a relationship, he really plays with his creative juices on this song. Like many of the songs on the album, Asher has fun with the music. Much of the production is almost hippyish, but it usually works. Having Cee-lo on the record is a plus, although it doesn't do a whole lot in terms of making the song better. This a 3.5.

6. She Don't Wanna Man: Here is another song that is a really untraditional hip hop song. It is a song more for the club and radio. It was okay, but nothing to get excited about. I can still stand it, but it is probably one that I will start skipping over really soon. No more than a 3, but I could even give it a 2.5.

7. Sour Patch Kids: Roth's conscious side really starts to come out in this song. Those who have listened to mixtapes probably know about this side of Asher and he really does this song justice. Trying to make people aware of issues within our country and others and things we need to do to fix them, it was a great effort. The feel of the song was just so so to me, though. So, I'm going to rate this 4.5.

8.  As I Em: I thought this was one of the best songs on the album. Of course there have been tons and tons of comparions to Eminem, but Asher tries to finally put an end to all of it. Doing it in a very poetic way, he breaks down all comparions that can be made, how Eminem paved the way for him, and what he has to go through in order to seperate himself. This is a 5.

9. Lion's Roar: This seems like another expieriment with the music. He was just having a good time in the studio it seems. He has a legend on the track in Busta Rhymes, but neither one of them really kill the track. That isn't to really be expected on a song like this, though. It is more of just going off the feel of the music. I give it a 3.

10. Bad Day: A pretty funny story of what has transpired throughout this "bad day." While what this day constitues most wouldn't constitue as a real bad day, it just allows for a little humor. Not anywhere near the best story presented, but it was still pretty good. I think a 4 is appropriate.

11. His Dream: This is a reflective Asher telling the story of his father's sacrifices and the appreciation he has for those sacrifices. This is a very nice tribute and he delivers it in a very creative and lyrical way. It is also refreshing in hip hop to see a tribute to a father as most in hip hop have grown up without their fathers. I hate to throw race into this conversation, but hopefully we can get some tributes to some black fathers because there defintiely are plenty that take care of their children. This is a 5.

12. Fallin': A really feel good track that goes through a summarized story of Asher's journey through hip hop and other parts of his life. This was a great song and deserves a 5, as well.

Overall, the album was pretty good. For the first try and some of the songs just being more experimental than anything, I though it faired pretty well, but I definitely think that given a little more, Asher could make a really good album. I can only give this album about a 3.5, but more because I didn't enjoy the feel of some of the club songs. Other than that, the album was solid.

Peace.
