Funkmaster Flex vs. Interscope Records
Obviously Flex has some insight that most of us might not have, but regardless of what's going on, I have to say that I'm glad people are starting to really state their opinion on what's going on within the industry. Of course we hear people complain and everything about what is going on, but you don't hear a public figure on radio going so hard. I'm not going to necessarily say that I completely agree or disagree with what he said because I don't know exactly what he is talking about. He kind of hinted at it, but it was never really clear. However, I respect Flex and I trust his judgement, so IF there is some shady stuff being done, then people need to be called out.
We all know that hip hop is in this state of emergency right now and we need to do what we can to protect it. That is what I believe Flex was doing and I really respect that. Of course Interscope has been mention a lot lately and not in the best light, so hopefully they can get some things moving and change this perception and this reputation they are starting to build.
If what Flex said was true about all those artists leaving, that means a lot of different changes for the label. As mentioned, Fifty does have only one more album left on his contract (not including his Best Of... album). If he ever gets it out (push back after push back) I wonder how all of this is going to affect his decision. In one interview a month or two ago, he did mention that he might shop around but that he would still see what Interscope had to offer. And who knows what affect Em and Dre would have on his decision. If, for whatever reason, he does end up leaving, that could have a profound impact on the label. With all of these other artists and their labels moving (once again only according to Funk Flex), they might be in a little trouble. But I guess only time will tell.
Regardless of what happens, I just like the fact that there is some public, vocal frustration. I'm hoping that this trend will continue and we can see a little bit of change start to come around. Artists complaining about contracts and a few angry listeners isn't going to be enough to change the culture of the industry. Real soon I will post my solution to starting to turn this mess around. It will be a lot to write though, so I might break it up into a weekly segment. We'll see. Until then, let's put some pressure on everybody in the industry. That means artists, radio, and labels alike.
How are yall feeling about this? You agree with Flex or did he take it too far? You have beef with the industry at all or you cool with where it's at? Let me hear something. As always, comment or email at straightouttahiphop@gmail.com.
Peace.
