The Last Kiss album review
Here it is, the review of Jadakiss' new album The Last Kiss. I won't say too much and just get into it except, remember that this is only my opinion and how I would rate the album, so if you don't agree, it doesn't matter lol. Naw, it's just my opinion so you don't gotta agree if you don't want. Anyway, everything is rated on a scale of 5, including the overall rating. Enjoy!
Can't Stop Me - Whole song was good, but the third verse was so nice. It was real hip hop, but he was able to use it as a single. I'm glad he decided to go with that instead of some of the more obvious choices. They probably will come out as well, but of the songs that will probably come out as singles, this is probably the best one. Rate it a 4.
Who's Real - With Swizz Beat on the record, you know the production was on point. Swizz also put in a little vocals on the hook as well so this could potentially be a single sometime in the future. It was pretty good, but I think not having Jada on all three verses kinda hurt the song. Still pretty decent, though. I gotta give it a 3.5.
Grind Hard - Definitely the hustler's anthem of the album. Mary J. Blige came in on the hook and held it down, as she always does. I enjoyed the fact that the beat switch back and forth between the verses and the hook. It was a little rougher during the hooks to match Jada's delivery and lyrics, but eased up once Mary came on the track. Nice track, another 4.
Something Else - Once again, Jada's third verse on here was incredible. Jeezy's verse wasn't his absolute best, but it was what you would expect from Jeezy. The two collaborate real well and I wouldn't be surprised to see more of it in the future because even though this wasn't it, I think they could definitely make a monster song. However, because Jada's last verse was so crazy and it still has an anthem feel, I'm still gonna give it a 4.5. It's just something you could ride to.
One More Step - Great tag team between Styles P and Jada. They play off of each other perfectly. The only problem I have with it is that I don't think the production really matched them very well. The beat was good, but I just don't believe it worked with that song. Hot collabo, though. I'll give it a 4.
Stress Ya - Anytime Pharrell is on the hook, really on the song, it will probably be a single. This was a little more pop, dedicated to the ladies. Although it wasn't my favorite song, you can't front on the Neptunes talent. The beat was actually sick, I just don't know if it was the right thing for Jada. I would expect Jada to be on some hard hittin, gangsta type beats. But, the production is fire and Jadakiss can still make sure that a pop song has some type of lyrical content behind it, so I'll give it a 4.
What If - With this type of collaboration, what else can you expect? One of the best, if not the best song off the album. I actually think Jada got Nas on this one. Nas was a little more personal with his; a little more cocky, but still ripped the track. Jada however went all in and asked a lot of questions that could really get you thinking. Hands down, 5.
Things I've Been Through - Once again, not a beat I would have guessed Jada would have been rappin over, but this one really worked for me. I am a huge Luther fan so that was icing on the cake for me. As they have been for the majority of the album, the lyrics were on point, but I really love when rappers get real reflective, so I enjoyed this even more. Some people may not agree with me, but this is actually my kind of track, so I'm giving it a 5.
I Tried - Great track. Lyrics were straight fire, again. Not too much else to say. This track was on point. Another 5.
Rocking With The Best - Another one for the ladies. I thought it was alright, but nothing really special. I gotta give this one only a 3.5.
Smokin Gun - I don't know why, but this hook was amazing to me. Jazmine Sullivan really did her thing on here. And the content in the song was real good, too. I was really feelin' this song. It gets a 5.
Cartel Gathering - I like everybody that they got for this track. Both Ghost and Raekwon did their thing. I don't think it was an ultimate track, but it did definitely please. I thought the title and the beat were appropriate for the people spittin' on this one. It came together pretty nice. I'll give it a 4.
Come & Get Me - Probably the darkest production on the album, but since he was teaming up with Sheek Louch on this one, it's not too much of a surprise. It was definitely a different tone from the rest of the album, though. Jada spit real hard on this one, though. The hook wasn't all that to me, but it went along with the rest of the song. I think it deserves a 4.5.
By My Side - No surprise that this was the first official single. By the title alone and the fact that Ne-yo is featured on here, you probably could guess that this is dedicated to all the ladies out there. There is no debating that Ne-yo makes hits though, and he did it again. This is definitely a radio-friendly song, but they lyrics were still pretty nice. I'll give it a 4.
Letter To B.I.G. - As many people redid this song, I honestly think Jada's version was the best. Sometimes you just can't replace the original. That is definitely the case when it comes to this song. Another 5.
Something Else (Remix) - It didn't really do any more than the original. In fact, having more people on there I think actually took away from the song a little bit. I think they could have kept this one off the album, but it was just a bonus song anyway and he's showing love to the CTE family, so it's all good. I gotta give it only a 3.5, though.
Death Wish - It was a pretty good song. I thought Jada's verse was real nice and Wayne actually had a couple of lines that stood out, but I think he might have been able to do a little more. One thing I can say about this song and all the others where there are features, nobody got Kiss on his own album this go around.
Overall, I have to give it a 4. I think there were just a couple radio songs too many for me, otherwise it would have been at least a 4.5. For me, the shock was the production of the album. It seemed to be a lot lighter and more uptempo than I expected. I had no problems with it, though. I thought all of the beats were pretty good, there were just a few that didn't quite match the lyrics or delivery, but that happens. Jadakiss delivered excellent lyrics throughout the whole album. He has been underrated for years and I think this is another cd that can easily go under the radar, but people should cop it if they get a chance.
That's it for me. What do you think about the album. Comment or email at straightouttahiphop@gmail.com. I'll leave you with the video to "Can't Stop Me" (I tried to get the "By My Side video as well, but Universal has it on lock, so sorry).
Peace.
