New York's Impact On the Re-emergence Hip-Hop
Before I get started, I want to say thank you to Yung106 for his comment. I have to say that I pretty much agree with what you have to say and we'll actually be talking about Lauryn Hill soon (everybody view the comment under the last blog and give your own opinion). Now, this blog is going to be centered around an interview that Rakim gave on the radio (view article at http://www.defsounds.com/news/Rakim_says_ny_responsible_for_hip_hops_decline ). In the interview, Rakim says that the reason hip hop is suffering is because New York has not performed the way they did back in the day (80s & 90s).
My question is, does it all rest on New York to bring hip hop back? Or in other words, can every other region perform well and represent hip hop well, but will we not consider it "alive" until New York is back on top? Personally, I don't care if every single cat that comes out of New York for the next year, it is on every MC from every region to pull their weight in order for hip hop to reach another peak. I understand what Rakim is saying since New York is the birth place of this genre that we love, but in an age where everybody reps their respective areas and can almost care less where the next man is from, I don' t know if people look to New York as much as they used to.
Right now, there are up-and-comers from every region that are really putting in work and should blow. I think it's up to us to give them the recognition they deserve and as long as they get are brought to the main stream (no matter where they are from) I think that hip hop can get back to the days I think we all miss. I'm a huge fan and have a great respect for Rakim, but I'm not sure if I can agree 100% with him on this. I understand what he's saying, and I'm hoping that maybe it will spark some more great MCs to come out of New York, but I think its on everybody that comes into the game to show and prove and give us what we've been missing.
Those were my thoughts, but do you think that we do have to wait for NY? Let me hear it.
Peace.
